Self-reflection
Introspection is our topic this month. It is also the most important habit and virtue in daily life. That special year 2020 has just passed and we have a lot of things to introspect.
Confucius once said, “I reflect on myself three times a day.” If we reflect every day on whether what we have done that day is correct and whether what we have said is appropriate, then we can change the mistakes we made that day in time and improve ourselves better, so that we can also understand people and things in this world more clearly.
If we do not reflect on ourselves, we will not learn something new. For example, Shen Kuo of the Song Dynasty commented after reading Bai Juyi’s “Peach Blossoms in the Da Lin Temple”: “In the poem, since the fragrance of April is already finished, how can there be peach blossoms beginning to bloom later? Did the poet also contradict itself?” Since then, Shen Kuo has been self-reflecting, thinking that he had read too little and was not experienced enough to understand the ancient poem. It was only when he went to the mountains once that he discovered that the contradiction in the poem was caused by the difference in altitude between the higher and the lower part of the mountain. In the process of self-reflection, Shen not only dispelled the self-contradiction in the poem, but also learned something new.
Of course, if we do not introspect, we will not find our own shortcomings. Legend has it that Prometheus created mankind, and when he first created man, he hung two bags on each person’s body, one is in front of him and one on his back, which contained all the ugly flaws of that person. People habitually put these flaws in the back pocket. This will not be easy to be found. But then people naturally tend to ignore their own shortcomings. Back to the present day, we only dig into the shortcomings of others without paying attention to ourselves, and this has to be solved by sufficient self-reflection.
Of course, I have also felt the benefits of introspection in recent school activities. For example, in a recent chess tournament, I lost in the first round because I didn’t know that there was a 10-minute limit on the game. So I came home and did some reflection. What was the reason why I didn’t know the details of the tournament? It was because I didn’t go to the bulletin board regularly, so after that I made it a habit to go to the bulletin board every day, which helped me a lot in my study afterwards.
There are also many things in our academic career that require introspection. These include: analyzing the key points and what you got wrong after the test, whether it was a lack of revision or a failure to review the questions; reflecting on whether you broke a school rule accidentally or whether there is a reason to avoid it next time; looking at any grammatical or syntactic mistakes after writing an essay or a paper or any content that could be added or modified; summarizing your winning experience in house activities; and summarizing your winning experience in basketball, soccer, and chess. In basketball, soccer and chess, you should review the game afterwards and think about what you did well, whether you helped your teammates well, whether you used your tactics well, etc.(et cetera)
From this we can also see the importance of self-reflection. So we have to reflect often in general, so that we can do it to know ourselves in difficult and dangerous situations. It also confirms the words of Watts: “Self-reflection is the way to virtue and God.” In conclusion, let’s all develop the good habit of daily introspection!
Thank you all!
